Grand Slam Tennis is a deceptive game. With its playful title and cartoony art style, you’re probably expecting something akin to Wii Sports Tennis, but just with added MotionPlus controls. But GST’s sunny exterior hides a game with a steep learning curve, and gameplay that skirts the border between arcadey and realistic.
Control-wise, GST is surprisingly versatile. You can change your setup on-the-fly by adding or removing the MotionPlus accessory and Nunchuk, and the game automatically responds by increasing or decreasing your sensitivity. Less-experienced and younger players will probably feel more comfortable using just the standard Wii Remote, but diligence and practice with both peripherals plugged-in pays off in the long run. The Nunchuk especially is necessary for rallying back-and-forth from the net, and anticipating your opponents’ shots. Plus you don’t stand a chance against the AI opponents on harder difficulty modes without the added maneuverability of the Nunchuk.
